Dine-O-Round

Introduction to Concessions
It's really important when writing an argumentative essay to show that you have have considered both sides of the argument in a thoughtful way.  To concede means to "admit that something is true or valid after first denying or resisting it" (Google).  After your concession you need to follow it up with a counter argument and then a conclusion.

Transitions to help start your concession:
Remember your concession points out that other people might feel differently about your thesis statement, that there is another side to the point you're trying to make. Provide at least 2 reasons why people might support your concession.
  • It is true that...
  • Admittedly...
  • Granted...
  • Certainly...
  • Of course...
Transitions to help introduce your counter argument:
BUT, you need to follow up your concession with reasons why people that might feel differently about your original thesis are WRONG!
  • On the other hand...
  • However...
  • Nevertheless...
Transitions to help with your conclusion:
  • As a result...
  • Therefore...
  • Thus....
